The timely and accurate provision of material relies to a large extent on the accuracy and completeness of the information generated by the originator of an order and the ability of the supplier to reinforce and supplement this information. Many suppliers see the provision of an accurate and complete bibliographic service as a major feature in their strategy. Evaluating the strength and utility of such services is one of the most difficult aspects of customer/supplier relationships. In many cases the customer may be supporting a service which is not really required. Often the information given on a customer's original order is sufficient and accurate enough to enable the item to be supplied immediately. On others the very nature of the material and lack of information may defeat the intermediate supplier just as much as the originator.

On the other hand, the supplier that can rapidly locate and supply an obscure, urgently required item scores well. Only experience can provide a guide to the benefits using any one supplier can bring to such a situation, although information on the skills and sources available to them will give a strong clue. There is, however, little benefit from receiving a service you do not need, and if you have confidence in your own bibliographic resources you should find a supplier who will offer alternative plus points. A mutual understanding of the bibliographic tools regularly employed by both parties and a common set of codes to denote sources checked will at least prevent needless duplication of effort and eliminate time wasted in repeated checking.
